Aortic Research Fund in Cardiothoracic Surgery

About Aortic Research Fund in Cardiothoracic Surgery

Dr. Chris Burke, a cardiothoracic surgeon at the University of Washington specializing in aortic care, is researching a novel aortic graft that could dramatically improve long-term outcomes and safety for cardiac surgery. When looking retrospectively at patients with Marfan’s Syndrome, Dr. Burke’s research team noticed a 3x higher incidence rate of future Type-B aortic dissections of patients who underwent aortic surgery compared to a non-surgical cohort. He is partnering with UW BioEngineering to create a novel 40-micron pore polyurethane vascular graft that is resistant to foreign body reaction and closely matches the compliance and biomechanics of the native aorta. This graft is already in human use in small sizes, primarily for dialysis access, demonstrating great potential for application in other vascular grafts.

The Think Forward Foundation’s generous investment serves as the catalyst to take the research to the next level. Dr. Burke will begin performing benchtop biomechanical testing on this novel graft in larger aortic sizes, and initiate pre-clinical trials in models that most closely resemble a human aorta. If successful, this novel graft could drastically reduce the likelihood of adverse aortic dissections after aortic surgery, and improve the lives of many patients.
